Let’s see, there’s B2B, a term that was coined when business-to-business communications started coming into wide use. Then B2C arose, to differentiate business-to-consumer communications from the B2B kind.
Then all kinds of other abbreviations cropped up. Like C2C (think eBay), B2G (government sales), and P2P (peer-to-peer).
Now get ready for M2M, or machine-to-machine communications. Rather, get ready for it to expand into every aspect of life.
Basic M2M has been around for a long time. For example, when a hospital monitors a patient’s heartbeat through telemetry, that’s an example of M2M communications.
True M2M goes beyond telemetry, however. It makes advanced use of wireless transmitters, receivers and 3G networks. Your friendly local EZ Pass system is a harbinger of the future. In 10 years, there will be more machines talking to one another than there will be people on the planet.
It’s true. The machines are going to take over.
